Today, Nigeria is a net importer of agricultural produce. Large food products import include wheat ($1.1bn), fish ($0.7bn), rice ($500m), and sugar ($400m). Total food import bill of USD4.2 bn annually. – Ayokunle Fatokun, March 12, 2016. This is the sorry state in which we find ourselves, depending on other nations to feed us despite the fact that we are blessed with fertile land and manpower and as such, have the capacity to feed ourselves and also export to other nations. The question arises: what can you and I do instead of grumbling and complaining? How can we make a difference and join the conversation?

HOMEGROWN was born out of a need to provide the common man with the opportunity to impact the Ineficit and challenges we face considering the enormous waste of resources in the importation of food in our country. It aims to contribute in developing ideas and conversations in developing one of Africa’s greatest gifts – fertile land and abundant manpower.

Will Allen, founder of Growing Power, echoes our thoughts: “Our motto is simple: to grow food, to grow minds, and to grow community.”
