Leaving the Comfort Zone; An Essential Tool for Personal Growth
Have you ever thought of the reason why a seed when buried must first die before it sprouts and begins to grow? It is because growth involves giving away of the current today for a better tomorrow!
This exactly applies to a human being. For a man to move from one level of achievement to a greater one, he must dwell less in his present achievement and aim for a greater one. To do this, he has to follow this growth chain:
- Leave his comfort zone
- Bury himself in new ideas
- Nurture and water the idea.
When this is done, in no time new achievement will spring forth that will bring better returns and rewards. Please note the sequence in the chain, and I will explain further.
A comfort zone is simply an environment or a situation where one feels safe or at ease. Lifehacker defines it as a “behavioral space where your activities and behaviors fit a routine and pattern that minimizes stress and risk”. Yes, here, stress and risk are very minimal, one is relaxed and feels very safe. But hear what John Maxwell said, ” if we are growing, we are always going to be out of our comfort zone”!
Leaving one’s comfort zone is a very crucial step that must be taken on the journey to greatness. It involves a lot of sacrifices, and self-denier. Leaving comfort zone to a young graduate may mean leaving your parent’s house to face realities of life and take responsibility for your actions, it may be putting aside your pride to learn that vocation, it may be taking the bold step of starting that business, taking that professional exam, taking time to read books written by great scholars, etc. Listen to this, that present state you think you are comfortable with is not your best. There is still much more you can achieve if only you can detach yourself from your present achievement and aim higher.
There is a saying that “a ship in a harbor is safe, but that’s not what a ship is built for”. Consider a situation where a seed is not planted but kept in a golden container because of how beautiful it looks, after spending a while in the golden container, you will agree with me that it will surely die. That’s also the case with a human being. If a man feels too comfortable in his current state and achievements and refuses to work hard for greater ones, such achievement will in no time become outdated and obsolete. That is the bitter truth!
But then, after leaving the comfort zone, one must also bury one’s self in new ideas, water and nurture it to maturity to achieve greater returns. This is where the real business is. Remember a seed planted but not watered and nurtured will die without growing. It requires a lot of thinking, self-discovery, trying new things, risk taking, research, and consistency. It is a sacrificial stage, but the end result is the victory, more money, more achievements, more fame, and lots more. (wink*)
