The Oyomesi Festival Of Learning which was held between 29th June 2018 and 4th July 2018 in Ibadan marked the start of innovative learning in Oyo State. The festival of learning started with the hackathon held from 29th June to 1st July 2018.


The hackathon which was the first ever environmental hackathon in Nigeria was focused on how to create commercially viable solutions to issues surrounding waste management in Nigeria.


The hackathon themed “REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE” and which had more than 100 tech enthusiasts in attendance opened with an opening address from the Special Adviser to the Governor on  Education, Dr. Bisi Akin-Alabi after which participants got down to pitching their ideas. About 30 ideas were pitched by various participants after which they were all divided into different groups.


The hackathon ended with three groups winning N2million naira and 6 participants winning a trip to U.K to further their knowledge on how to be more innovative with their ideas.


Other events during the Festival of Learning were the Free Parents Workshop and Exhibition which took place at the Western Hall, House of Assembly, State Secretariat, Ibadan, the Children’s Conference and LGA/LCDA Education Show and Exhibition, 2nd Prime Quality Time and Tour of Exhibition Stands by the Prime Positive Role Model (His Excellency, Senator Abiola) which had parents, teachers, and stakeholders in Education from all over Oyo State in attendance.


As an aftermath of the Festival of Learning, the Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Bisi Akin-Alabi disclosed that the Oyo state government has decided that about 120 government-owned schools in the State will be powered by solar energy.

She explained that the benefiting schools, especially those that are digitally compliant, are expected to utilize the free solar to power their schools.


Other things unveiled at the Festival of Learning were the Oyomesi museum learning, Oyomesi smart tab, Oyomesi project office inside the secretariat, that was donated by some of the high profile attendees of the event.
