What is Scoliosis?


Many of us are ignorant of this word. Many of us haven’t even heard about it before. Many of us have no idea that some people live with a large ‘S’ on their backs.

Scoliosis from Ancient Greek is a common medical condition in which a person’s spinal axis has a three-dimensional deviation. Although it is a complex three dimensional condition, on an X-ray, viewed from the rear, the spine of an individual with scoliosis can resemble an “S” or a “C”, rather than a straight line.

The signs of scoliosis can include:

Uneven musculature on one side of the spine

A rib prominence or a prominent shoulder blade, caused by rotation of the ribcage in thoracic scoliosis.

Uneven hips, arms or leg lengths
Slow nerve action (in some cases)

Constipation due to tightened organs from curvature.

Pain in back, shoulders, and neck

Limited mobility


The traditional medical management of scoliosis is complex and is determined by the severity of the curvature and skeletal maturity, which together help predict the likelihood of progression. The conventional options for children and adolescents are:

1. Observation

2. Bracing

3. Specialized Physical Therapy

4. Surgery

For adults, treatment usually focuses on relieving any

1. Painkilling medication

2. Bracing

3. Exercise

4. Surgery


It is not a postural problem.

You do not get scoliosis from a soft mattress.

The carrying of heavy school bags neither causes a curve nor makes an existing one worse.

You do not get scoliosis from watching too much television and eating too much junk food.

Scoliosis is not contagious – you cannot catch it from someone who has a curvature.

Having scoliosis does not mean that you will not be able to have children or will have trouble with a normal birth.

A friend of mine thought scoliosis was an “oyibo” ailment. I laughed. I am a victim and even though mine isn’t as bad, my youngest sister happens to take the fall. Hers is a serious “S” shape and while my parents have done everything possible to help her, the facilities in Nigeria are not helping. I remember my parents went to Enugu because they heard they had better facilities. Unfortunately, the machine for making the perfect brace size for my sister was not functioning. And so they left. This is the reality of every Nigerian in a dangerous health situation – inadequate or insufficient medical facilities. The alternative was surgery that would require them putting big metal rods in her back to be removed a year later but even the doctors were not confident. And so we are hoping that spine curve halts or curves at a very slow pace until she’s 18.

June is Scoliosis awareness month and early detection is key.
EARLY DETECTION is the message! It is the KEY to
defeating scoliosis 100 percent!
Here’s how to diagnose the symptoms of scoliosis:

When your child is Standing,
-Are his/her shoulders uneven?
-Does one shoulder blade appear higher than the other?
-Does one hip appear higher than the other?
-When the arms are by the side, is there a larger gap on
one side between the arm and waist?
-Is the waist uneven?
-Does the back look slanted to one side?
-Is there a visible curve at the back (however mild)?
-Is the head slightly off center of the pelvis?


If you notice one or more signs, however unsure, TAKE
Be Observant. Act on Time. Defeat Scoliosis!
