Nigeria’s U-23 team, the Dream Team VI’s, hopes of winning an Olympic gold medal has been dashed after a 0-2 defeat to their counterparts from Germany in Wednesday’s semi-final fixture of the Men’s Football event at the Corinthians Arena.

The  Dream Team VI were unable to replicate  the achievement of  Dream Team I Atlanta in 1996 and that of Dream Team IV in Beijing 2008, a place in the final of the Olympics men’s football event after the African U-23 Champions  conceded two goals in each half of their semi-final game against the European giants.

Lukas Klostermann gave  the Germans the lead in the 9th minute before Nils Petersen secured the win for Horst Hrubesch’s men in the closing stages to book a place in the final against  hosts, Brazil.

Nigeria, who can now at best hope  for a bronze medal, will play Honduras who lost their own semi-final fixture to Brazil 5-0, at the Maracana stadium on Sunday, before the final showdown between Brazil and Germany at the same venue.
