OLYMPICS: Oshonaike, Toriola bow out as Quadri progress to the next round

Team Nigeria assistant captain in the Rio 2016 Olympics, Funke Oshonaike has been knocked out in the women’s Singles round 1 after losing 2-4 to 15-year-old Adriana Diaz of Puerto Rico.
She lost 7-11 in the opening set, before winning 11-7, 11-4 to lead 2-1, only to lose the next three sets 11-7, 11-5, 11-2.
Seven times Olympics competitor Segun Toriola was beaten 4-2 by his Japanese challenger, Niwa Koki. He won 9-11 in the first set before the Japanese rallied back to dominate the second set 11-5, Koki also won the third set 11-7 before Toriola triumphed in the fourth set, leaving scores at 4-11.
But the Japanese then rallied to overpower Toriola 11-6, 11-1 in the fifth and sixth sets respectively to bring total scores to 4-2.
Toriola, born in Kwara State, Nigeria will be honoured by the International Federation of Table Tennis for his record of seven appearances in the Olympics.
Aruna Quadri shocked 5th seeded Chih-Yuan Chuang with a shocking 4-0 win in the men’s singles event. He won straight sets 11-6, 12-10, 11-6 and 11-7, without Chuang even winning a game.
As a result of his victory, Quadri remains the only African player left in both the Men and Women’s singles.
