RIO OLYMPICS UPDATE: DREAM TEAM VI WIN BRONZE TO RECORD TEAM NIGERIA’S FIRST MEDAL
Coach Samson Siasia’s Dream Team VI on Saturday the 20th of August 2016 won Team Nigeria’s first medal in this year’s Olympics event with a 3-2 victory over Honduras in their bronze medal match.
The African u23 champions win courtesy of a Sadiq Umar’s brace and Aminu Umar’s strike at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte on Saturday evening makes it Nigeria’s first Olympics medal in the men’s football event since Beijing 2008.
AS Roma’s forward Sadiq Umar gave Nigeria the lead by slotting in captain John Mikel Obi’s pass past goalkeeper Luis Lopez before Aminu Umar doubled the lead four minutes into the second half.
Striker Sadiq Umar increased the lead in the 56th minute to complete his brace but the Central Americans nearly staged a dramatic comeback with substitute Lozano and Pereira scoring in the 71st and 85th minutes.
With Team Nigeria’s participation in 18 events, Dream Team VI’s bronze victory makes it one win from a possible 18 medals in the Rio 2016 Olympics.
