After 16 days of sporting events involving 206 nations and a refugee Team, the Rio Olympics came to a close with a spectacular 3-hour ceremony celebrating the Brazilian arts on Sunday evening.

The closing ceremony which had world leaders in attendance, featured some memorable exhibitions like human formations of iconic Rio landmarks – Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain and the Olympic flame which was extinguished by rain which then gave life to a large tree sculpture to symbolise rebirth.

The highlight of the event was the  symbolic handover of the Olympic flag to Japan, as they prepare to host the next Olympics, Tokyo 2020.
