Meet the Government: Know Your Governor, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi
Governor Abiola Adeyemi Ajimobi, the present Executive Governor of Oyo state was born on the 16th December 1949 (69years) into the Ajimobi family, Oja-oba Ibadan. He has a royal and political line with his grandfather who was the Sobaloju of Ibadan land and his father who also was an Honourable member of the House of Assembly in the Old Western region.
He had his primary education at Saint Patrick’s Primary School and Ibadan City Council primary School, Ibadan; with his secondary education at Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan. He then had his university education in the United States of America where he studied Business Administration and Finance at the State University New York, In Buffalo, New York. He also had MBA at the University park, Illinois.
Gov. Abiola Adeyemi returned to Nigeria and started his career by joining Management and Industrial Consulting firm as a Senior Consultant. He also worked briefly with Modulor Group (an architectural firm) as the Finance and Admin Controller, before joining Nestle Foods PLC. as the Operations Controller and later as Marketing Controller. He also joined National Oil and Chemical Marketing Company, where he served on various seats of leadership positions- Consumer Products manager, Divisional Manager, Area manager.
He was also appointed as the Lubricant Manager at the Shell International Oil Company and was also promoted to various positions such as West Africa Chief Executive, Operational Director of Shell Marketing Company, Oil Sales Manager, Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil and Chemical Marketing Company; where he contributed immensely to the growth of the Company before he retired voluntarily after 26years of service in the Oil industry
His political career was launched when he became a Senator of the Republic of Nigeria in 2003, he also served as the principal officer and Deputy Minority leader of the Senate. During his senate days, in 2005 he established the first and the largest FREE VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTER, in Oyo State; which was recognized and certified as a training center by the Industrial Training Fund of the Federal Government.
He then contested in the gubernatorial election in 2007, under the umbrella of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) but lost the election bid; and then contested again in 2011 under the All Progressive Congress and was elected in a keenly contested election. He later contested for a second term in the year 2015 under the All progressive Congress (APC) amongst Christopher Alao Akala and Rasheed Ladoja and was elected; making him the first person to occupy the highest seat twice and as well in succession.
Governor Abiola Ajimobi is happily married for 38years to Florence Ajimobi and they have five children.
