Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan will face Rivers United of Port Harcourt  on Sunday the 5th of February 2017 by 4:00 pm in Matchday 6 fixture of the 2016/2017 Nigerian Professional Football League.

The match, which will take place at the Lekan Salami Stadium Adamasingba Ibadan, is the sixth meeting between the two sides since 2013, a match which the two sides drew 0-0. The head to head record in the last five games between the sides stands thus:  Games played 5, Rivers United wins 2, Shooting Stars wins 1   Draws 2

This season, though, Rivers United is the team in better form. The Port Harcourt side are currently in 5th place on the NPFL  table with 9 points from 5 games. They are also yet to lose a game with their points coming from two wins and three draws. Their hosts how ever find themselves on the wrong side of the table, floundering in the relegation zone with only 4 points from five games and 14 places below their guests. 3SC is the side that is under most pressure to win this game, as coach Fatai Amoo continues to search for his second win as 3SC manager.

Even though their respective placings on the NPFL log may suggest otherwise, there is little to separate the two teams yet. Rivers United may be unbeaten in the league, they have found goals to come by, scoring only four goals in five games with two of their three draws being 0-0 and the third, an away game against bottom side Akwa United ending 1-1. 3SC, on the other hand, have only won 1 game (at home to Lobi Stars) but they have scored the same number of goals as their opponents despite not scoring in two of their five games (the 0-1 loss to Sunshine Stars in Akure and the 0-2 to ABS in Ilorin). This suggests that the teams’ attack is very balanced. One advantage that Rivers United may have however, is their defence which has only conceded on 2 in 5 games compared to 3SC’s defence which has conceded 6 in the same number. The Port Harcourt side also have the better away record with two away draws and they can fancy themselves getting a result against the Oluyole Warlords, who have already drawn one game at home this season to MFM. However 3SC will bank on the record that only once have they failed to score against their opponents in their three meetings at the Lekan Salami Stadium.

Prediction: Expect the game to be a cagey affair with few goals scored. Shooting Stars, however, have the advantage of playing at home and the Lekan Salami Stadium has been a fortress for 3SC of late, their poor results notwithstanding. Rivers United also have to travel all the way from Port Harcourt. 3SC to win narrowly.

Score: 3SC  1  Rivers United 0
