Technology: What Does it Mean to You?
Over the years I have heard people talk about technology and I never really understood what they meant, and this may be true for others. As a Technology ‘minor’ with little or no knowledge about Technology, I often saw technology in the real sense to just mean gadgets and all, until I realised that Technology could be wide, ranging from the field of Information Technology which includes programming , coding etc, to the heavier stuff. So what did I really think Technology was? If you’d asked me a few years ago my definition of Technology would have been similar to that of a machine, which is actually a product of the application of technology. If a machine is anything that saves time and energy, then Technology should too right? But as the days grew into years, so did my perception of Technology.
Let’s take a quick peep at a few definitions of Technology:
Business Dictionary defines technology as
…the purposeful application of information in the design, production and utilization of goods and services, and in the organization of human activities.
Cambridge Dictionary defines technology as
…the study and knowledge of the practical, especially industrial, use of scientific discoveries
Here is another definition I stumbled upon, made by Karehka Ramey in an article titled “What is Technology- Meaning of Technology and its Use,” dated December 12, 2013. It stated that Technology is
…a body of knowledge devoted to creating tools, processing actions and extracting materials.
Technology can also be referred to as
the application of science to solve a problem.
Undoubtedly, it can be seen that “Technology” means different things to the different people depending on what field you may find yourself. To a market woman who might not own a smartphone or POS machine, Technology can be deciphered as that calculator she utilizes in calculating her profits or losses. To an average university student, Technology can be interpreted as the smartphone or android device with which he or she communicates with people miles away. If we take it a little bit deeper, Technology can be seen in robotics which different countries are gradually employing in carrying out activities previously thought to be the exclusive reserve of human beings.
So, yes! Technology has offered us the opportunity to embark on more transactions and day to day activities with less time and energy expended. Well, isn’t that just great?
