Suspected gunmen belonging to rival gangs and cult groups yesterday Tuesday 24th May, 2016 took over some parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, terrorising residents and causing motorists and pedestrians to run into safety.
Our correspondent learnt that the mostly hit area was idi-Arere in the Ibadan South-East Local Government Area of Ibadan.Eyewitnesses said street gangs waged war against themselves in the area, although the actual cause of the fight was not known.
It was also gathered that members of a group known as One Million Boys around Kudeti area of the city were involved in the fight. One of the eyewitnesses said the fight began around 7am but peaked around 11am when gunshots were heard in the area.
“I wanted to open my shop this morning but someone told me that there could be a fight in Idi-Arere where my shop is located. I had to wait and study the situation before taking a decision. Around 8.30am, there was a commotion in the area as people began to flee.
“I joined them and from a safe location, I saw young boys with weapons. They had pistols, cutlasses and even bottles. They engaged themselves in a fight but out of fear, I had to leave the area,” said the witness who simply identified himself as Isiaka.
The situation was however brought under control by policemen who raced to the area in several vans. It was not clear if any arrest had been made but the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the situation was under control. He said the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, had ordered deployment of policemen in the affected area.
Residents of Idi-Arere, Gege and Oja’ba told our correspondent that the police presence was needed in the areas because of constant fight between rival gangs who terrorise the people in the areas.
